Tips
- To train birds to the feeder, first remove all other sources of food. Chickens are creatures of habit and will always choose the option they are accustomed to.
- If necessary, set the feeder on wood or cement blocks. The base of the feeder should be at chest height of the shortest hen (approx. 8").
- For the first feeding, add extra food into the feeding port. Chickens will more readily learn how to use the feeder if they can access the feed without having to crane their necks.
- Do NOT allow feeder to run empty, otherwise hens will fight for space during refill.
Precautions
Roosters with large combs or wattles may have trouble accessing the feed.

Doesn’t work with my organic layer pellets, not enough of a gap for pellets to slide into place when there’s dust at the bottom. Premier 1 customer service acted like they’d never heard of this problem despite a few reviews saying the same thing. I’m going to try crumble and see if that works. If not we will have to modify the ports to make them shorter.

We have 20 chickens and use the 6-Port Elbow Feeder in the covered run, since there isn’t enough space in the coop. Our birds are pasture raised and spend most of their time grazing in a large fenced area, returning to the run for snacks and water. We also use heated waterers from Premier 1, which are perfect.
After a few weeks of use, we have had ongoing issues with feed flow. The pellets tend to break down into dust, which then builds up and blocks the feed from moving down into the ports. As a result, I have to manually poke the feed with a stick to get some into the port. Some ports clog more than others, though I’m not sure why. Right now, the feeder is nearly full, so it will be a while before we can fully inspect or troubleshoot the ports.
That said, the build quality is solid, and it does an excellent job keeping the feed dry. Moisture does not seem to be the issue. It is just that the feed does not flow freely. We are currently using Kruse’s Perfection Brand Organic Super Egg, and we have several bags to get through before we can test a different feed that may hold up better.
Overall, I am frustrated with the clogging, but I am hopeful we can find a workaround.

If you have goats and chickens together this is the best feeder. My goats can’t eat the chickens’ food anymore. Awesome feeder! Highly recommend!

This feeder is great! I no longer need to refill feed everyday. Almost 2 50lb bags fit in this feeder. With 19 hens it last about 6 weeks. I have not had any moisture problems as other reviews have said, but it is inside my coop so it stays dry.

I love the idea of the feeder, although it does not work well with crumble. After contacting customer service several times I was told moisture causes the crumble to cake and maybe mix some cracked corn in with my feed. Pretty expensive yard ornament.
