How It Works
Common Questions
- Will the Smart Satellite work in my area?
- The Smart Satellite communicates with cellular towers using the NB-IoT standard. NB-IoT devices are optimized to use very little energy, while transmitting data efficiently and reliably. If your mobile phone receives a signal at the location you wish to monitor, chances are the Smart Satellite will also be able to communicate with a nearby tower. If the monitor is placed in a location without adequate cellular coverage, it will not work.
NB-IoT coverage varies by region. We recommend checking out T-Mobile, Verizon or AT&T coverage maps to determine if service is available in your area.
- How long do the AA batteries last?
- (2) AA batteries (included) are used to enable communication with nearby cellular towers. The batteries are easily replaced. New alkaline batteries should power the unit at least 6 months.
- Can I use this for temporary electric netting?
- Yes. The Smart Satellite can be used to monitor voltage on electric netting. The trick is to find a suitable location to mount the device. It works best if your net fence is near a permanent post or structure. Otherwise, you’ll need to build your own field mount.

That’s why we were excited to learn about the Smart Satellite. This little device will keep an eye on the fence voltage, helping to prevent livestock escapes.
By using a simple app on our smartphones, we now get real-time notifications whenever there is a problem. We’ve installed a satellite at the end of the line (furthest away from the energizer) for each of our critical boundaries. That way we can be sure adequate voltage is reaching the end of the fence.

Game changer! It tells approximate joules on the fence any time and anywhere on my smartphone. We graze on remote properties with limited resources. No subscription needed. The only recommendation is for the company to change the notifications to less than 1 joule. We rotationally graze our goats for profit, and it would be nice for smaller, portable chargers.

This is one of the BEST electric fence products introduced in the past few years. Finally I can be alerted to tree branches falling on my fence or animals yanking on the strands. The manual doesn’t explain all the details, so here’s how it works as far as the timing. It sends an update across the (free) cellular network once per hour as long as the fence has good voltage above the threshold you set. When the voltage drops below your set threshold, it sends an alert in about 15 seconds. So it doesn’t wait for the next hour update interval to send an alert, but it lets you know right away whenever there is a problem. It sends the alerts to both the smartphone app and via email. I love this new gadget, saves me a lot of guessing about the fence status!

It worked for about 3 months and then it kept loosing phone signal. Each time I have to go disconnect everything, pull out batteries to reset and then it would connect for a couple days to one more week before disconnecting again. On the fourth time resetting, it never connected again. So it waits until you cannot return it to stop working. I get 2–3 bars of phone service which you would think would be plenty but I think it’s just a cheap piece of junk that should cost $40 not $200. Don’t waste your money on this.

A few months ago, a purchased one of these Smart Satellite fence monitors. I was so impressed that I ordered 4 more a couple weeks later. Read this review before purchasing.
The good: The app for this fence monitor is really good. I like it a lot. It’s also pretty responsive giving me close to real time information on the fence. I also like the fact that I don’t have to renew cellular contracts with this system. It works great if you have really good cell signal. If I had really good cellular service on all of my 10+ electric fences, I would give this product a 5/5 and order another 5–6 units.
The bad: If you don’t have 4 / 5 bars of cellular signal, you may want to think about getting a different monitor. For whatever reason, the manufacturer decided to cheap out on the antenna in this module. Unfortunately for me, the fences where I wanted to place the additional 4 monitors have 2–3 bars of cell signal. I’ve found that only in 25% of the places where I planned to put these monitors with 2–3 bars of signal that this monitor was able to pick up signal. I even tried mounting them on 20' PVC pipes to try to get it up in the air more. If it does pick up signal but it has weak signal, the AA battery supply will be depleted in 3–4 days because it is constantly losing signal and trying to reconnect. It looks like I am going to have to renew my Fence Alarm subscriptions for the time being. I hope that the manufacturer gets this review and spends an extra $5–10 putting in a decent cellular antenna. When they do, and I can trust that they work, I would like to outfit all my farm’s fences with them.
