Tips
Brace installation basics:
- A good rule of thumb is to set 40–50% of the post below ground. More ground contact means greater strength and long-term stability.
- Strong braces resist lifting, twisting and movement under tension.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Incorrect brace angles: If the angles formed by the horizontal brace, end post and brace wire are wrong, the end post can lift out of the ground. To fix this, lower the brace bar or use a longer cross bar. We prefer an 8 ft brace bar set about 36" above the soil, with the brace wire attached at the same height.
- Undersized or shallow end posts: For fences 3–4 ft tall, use end posts at least 8" in diameter and set them 4 ft deep to handle load and tension.
- Floating braces: Braces that aren’t firmly held in place will eventually fail. Fixed, properly aligned braces provide far greater strength.
- “Live” wires contacting brace wires: As posts move, electrified wires can touch brace wires and short out the fence. Correct brace alignment and solid post installation help prevent this issue.
Taking the time to install braces correctly pays off with stronger fences, fewer repairs and longer service life.
